On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday, a milestone that invites reflection on the country’s past and its future. For National Life Group, the anniversary carries special meaning. Founded in Montpelier, Vermont, in 1848, National Life Insurance Company, one of the companies of National life Group, has been part of the American story for 178 years, more than 70 percent of the nation’s existence.

Throughout that time, National Life has grown and changed alongside the country. Its history has been shaped by many of the same forces that shaped America itself: expansion, war, economic hardship, pandemics, technological change, natural disasters and the enduring need for security.

Founded in a Growing Nation

From the beginning, National Life’s story has centered on one idea: keeping promises. One of the company’s earliest tests came in 1850, when Rowland Allen of Ferrisburgh, Vermont, died while traveling to the California Gold Rush. Although California was not yet part of the United States when his policy was issued, and although the young company had limited reserves, National Life honored the claim. Its founders secured capital on their personal credit so the benefit could be paid.

That moment set a standard that would guide the company for generations.

Through War, Pandemic and Hardship

National Life continued to serve through periods of national crisis. During the Civil War, it adapted so insureds could serve in the military. In the early 20th century, it paid claims during both World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, including more than $1 million in influenza-related claims. During World War II, the company suspended war clauses so death benefits could be paid for those who died in combat.

The company also endured the Great Depression, the flood of 1927, changing markets and technological transformation. It issued its one millionth policy in 1953, chose to remain rooted in Vermont, and later became a leader in adopting new technology, including installing Vermont’s first Remington-Rand Univac STEP computer in 1961.

Innovation for Independence

As the financial services industry evolved, National Life expanded its products, distribution and reach while maintaining its independence and policyholder-focused foundation. In the 21st century, the company continued to define itself through purpose. Its vision, “To bring peace of mind to everyone we touch,” and its mission, “Keeping our promises,” connected its founding commitment to its modern identity.

A New Century of Purpose

That purpose has also shown up in the community. Through programs such as LifeChanger of the Year, Do Good Fest, Share the Good and the National Life Group Foundation, the company has extended its promise beyond policies and claims. During the COVID-19 pandemic, National Life moved fully remote and established a $20 million foundation endowment. In 2023, after devastating flooding in Vermont, the company helped raise $1.7 million for response and recovery.

Looking Toward the Next 250 Years

As America turns 250, its story remains unfinished. So does National Life’s. Both have endured through courage, adaptation, service and a belief in a better future.

For National Life Group, the lesson of history is clear: through war and peace, prosperity and hardship, crisis and renewal, the promise still matters.

And the work of keeping it continues.
